Tuesday, December 12, 2023 - From David Dickie

Greetings everyone.  This is David, Ruth's son.

Ruth passed away last night.  She lived a long and full life, and did it her way until the very end.  She had a relentlessly positive outlook on life, an inspiration to me and many others.  Her last words to Suzanne and me were "My bags are packed and I have checked off my list.  Now I need you to organize my medicines."

All the Best,

David

Ruth's passing leaves a huge void in many lives. Her life tenets were an inspiration to most of us who "crossed her path". I am so fortunate to have had the benefit of her philosophies - in not just our real estate world, but also in her shared "Rambling With Ruth".
My hope is her family and friends will feel comfort in the coming days remembering all of her journeys.
Peace be with you all.

Our deepest condolences to David, Suzanne, Christina, and all the Dickie chicks. Rita called me last night to let me know. Gabi and I lit a candle for Ruth last night. We will all be thinking of the fond memories and good times centred around Ruth.

We have had Ruth as our good friend for over 50 years and even though we knew this was coming,it seems surreal. It is hard to imagine the world without Ruth and we send our condolences to all her family near and far. She was such an influence and leader for us, leading us to Nova Scotia and places all over the globe. We learned so many good things from her. How to cope and how to behave. Her generousity was limitless and impressive. She shared so much, be it food or hospitality or information. Special hugs to David, Suzanne, and Christina. You were wonderful to the end.

Although we knew Ruth had entered hospice and planned her final trip, her passing is a profound loss. The Elys owe a great deal to Ruth. She helped us purchase our Potomac home and always welcomed us to the various far flung Dickie properties. She and Ken introduced us to Nova Scotia and lured us to Gull Bay with all its beauty. She was a steadfast friend, wise counsel and wonderful fellow traveler, including gamely braving the hair raising rapids of the Colorado River in a wooden dory, taking a beautiful but dizzying horse back trip through the Canadian Rockies and flying to the arctic circle to experience the all night sun. As her health declined and age took its toll, Ruth remained active, optimistic and grateful for a full life. There are lessons for us all in reflecting on her journey.

I have just learned of Ruth's passing. When I went to visit her in Nova Scotia in September, we renewed a long time friendship beginning in Galveston. where we worked together in the inpatient division of Child Psychiatry. When we moved to Hampden Sydney, VA, Ruth and Ken and boys moved to Bethesda, so we continued the friendship with visits back and forth, Our visits became less frequent but the friendship was one that could immefiately resume unbroken as we celebrated with the various wedding annivesary parties Ruth was famous for hosting. There are so many memories we all share. Her life was a contant celebration that she shared with all those around her. Ruth will not be forgotten.

Love to all of Ruth's family and friends. Carolyn DeWolfe

As a charter member of Ruth's Picnic Group during my few years in Bethesda 50 years ago I can say that her greatest gift to me was instilling a lifelong passion for Having Fun and Eating Outdoors with Friends Who Make You Laugh. She also taught me the art of being a relaxed parent since we tried to let the children civilize themselves with a "No hitting, use words" motto and we didn't take it personally when confronted with 2 year olds' temper tantrums. As young moms without family nearby most of our Picnic Group became lifetime friends. Over the years Ken and Ruth came to our daughter's wedding in Colorado and attended one of my art exhibits in New Mexico and Graham and I visited them in Nova Scotia and enjoyed their fabulous anniversary celebrations in NS and Texas. Ruth's Christmas card arrived at our new Seattle address the day after she passed. She is surrounded by her wonderful family of angels on earth looking absolutely beloved and cherished. We will always remember her relentless spirit, generosity and boundless love of family. Our condolences to the Dickies, Buckleys and All who knew and cared for Remarkable Ruth.
