February 28, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Fruit.

When you leave the Riviera Grill restaurant, you are given a piece of fruit.  The custom is charming.  While we were still eating,  "The Old Man"brought over a papaya and put it on the table.   We thanked him but we wondered how we could carry it home as it was about a foot long.  Then on the way out, we noticed a bin containing oranges, with a sign saying "please take some oranges", so we did.  Right beside the opening to the street was a table of small watermelons with a sign saying "Help Yourself". By the time we were on the bike path starting to walk home, we realized we had a watermelon, a papaya and 6 oranges, all courtesy of the Riviera Grill and our friend "The Old Man".

Fortunately Ken was using the walker so we put the oranges in his basket and the papaya on the seat. Doreen carried the watermelon.  We have been eating on the fruit ever since.

Ken and I have wondered if the fruit comes from the old man's garden.  He started the custom four years ago and has kept it going ever since.  The gesture of being given  fruit when you leave is delightful.  You feel as if you want to return, which of course is the whole purpose.  But it is unusual.  Normally we leave the Riviera Grill with two oranges but on Sunday we had a bonanza.  But we only did as we were asked to do on the signs but we might have outdone ourselves.   We were happy to have all the fruit but we did giggle at ourselves for coming home with so much fruit.  We were just big kids.

February 27, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Dishwasher Detergent.

Wonderful Wendy did the shopping for our villa in Paradise Village,  She went to our market in the mall.  She quickly learned that imported food cost twice  as much as the food packaged in Mexico, so she started looking hard for the "Made In Mexico" fine print.  She does not read Spanish but she could find it and was successful with her choices.

When Wendy was looking for dishwasher detergent, she realized that the cost was exorbitant so she looked harder.  She found a round tub with pictures of dishes on the outside of the container so she bought it and used it when running the dishwasher in the villa.  All was well.  When we moved to our condo, we took the tub of detergent with us.  The first time I used it, I noticed that the glass ware was spotted so at the Mega store, I bought dishwasher detergent.

When Doreen was here, she asked about the round tub of detergent under the sink,  and I told her the story.  Doreen can read Spanish and told me that the tub was specifically designed  for cleaning greasy and dirty pots and pans and appliances.  No wonder the glasses were spotty.  We both laughed.   The round tub has done a great job on our greasy pots, thanks to Wendy.  What would we do without our Wonderful Wendy.

February 26, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. The Old Man.

We have known him ever since we began living at Nuevo Vallarta.  He  owns several restaurants just down the street from us and we would always see him and talk to him whenever we went to eat.  We  spoke of him as "the old man" because we did not know his name.  He was friendly.  And he did like to talk so  our questions to him would  be answered.  As he moved here from Toronto 20 years ago, he gave us lots of information about the area.  We felt that he was a friend as he always greeted us with great fervor  and we saw him every week.

The old man is of Italian descent and speaks English with an Italian accent.   Every day, he visits all his restaurant.  I have no idea what he does but I know he eats dinner at The Riviera Grill.  He certainly does not work in these restaurants.  One son still runs a restaurant in Toronto and  two sons manage places here.

Once, many years ago. Ken and I were having tea on the other side of the canal.  The little place was almost hidden under a balcony.  He spotted us and came over to say that we have become natives, to know about this place.  We just laughed.

Today, we four went to The Riviera Grill for a late lunch.  Where we were dining, the old man came into the restaurant, then came over to say hello.  And he brought over a big papaya to take home.  He was delighted to see us.  While we were talking,  the topic of age came up and he told us that he was getting old as he was 76.  I was shocked as I had always thought he was well over 85.  We told him that all of us at the table was older than him.  Being gracious, he would not believe us but eventually he congratulated us all.  We will continue to call him "The Old Man", but only behind his back.

February 25, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Outdoor Hockey.

Who would ever dream that 60,000 people would spend a lot of money to buy a ticket to watch a hockey game in an outdoor football stadium in the freezing cold.  You can barely see the players let alone the puck.   Several years ago, some clever person in the NHL suggested that the league hold a regular season game outside in a football stadium on January the 1st.   Lots of people thought it ridiculous.  The first outdoor game was sold out.  A star was born.

Today in Pittsburgh, the Philadelphia  Flyers played the Pittsburgh Penguins in the outdoor baseball stadium in Pittsburgh.  Every seat was full.  Evidently, the players love the outdoor games.  Many Canadian players grew up playing on lakes and backyard rinks so it is reminder of their youth but more and more of the players have always played in rinks  but they love the idea of outdoor hockey.  The game today was won by Pittsburgh.

It does make you wonder why it took so long for the officials of the NHL to think about holding the outdoor classics?  Everyone both players and fans today seemed to love the game,  I enjoyed it on TV  too but I was not cold.

February 24, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Winter 2018.

Finally, we have winter 2018 organized.  While we are here each year, we plan and implement our next year.  Now we are done.  We have set in place options for ourselves.    At Playa Royale, we own 10 weeks in our condo, but only 8 can be during the winter.  We bank those weeks for exchange. And the rule is you can only book one year ahead of the time you wish to preserve the space.  We own lots of points at the Time Share just down the road, called Paradise Village.  This year we stayed one week at PV in a large villa with my wonderful Wendy and her family.  And we have a membership at an all inclusive resort called The Hard Rock Resort just next door.  Last year we stayed there for two weeks.  Finally, we own four weeks at Vidanta, a large place across the canal.  We have yet to stay there.  So when we are organizing our winter, if we can not get one place, we just go to another.  Our system has worked well for us although not everyone would enjoy the complications.

Next year, Ken and I come to Paradise Village for one week from December 30 to January 6.  Next up is Playa Royale, our condo.  We come January 6 and leave February 3.   Then we go back to Paradise Village for three weeks, staying in a three bedroom penthouse.  Finally, on February 24 we will be back in our Playa Royale for two weeks, leaving for home on March 11.  We will enjoy the variety.  Each place is different and both the condo and the penthouse  have three bedrooms and three bathrooms  so company will be welcome.  What I will not be able to do is stock the freezer and fridge for the season.  This year has worked well in the food department.  Next year I bet we will eat out more frequently.  Now I can write it all down in the calendar.  Pretty nice.

February 23, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. The Little Restaurant.

This year the little restaurant beside the road has a new structure.  Several years ago, Rosa opened a  taco restaurant.  They cost $1.  At the rear of the space was the kitchen, covered by a plastic tarp.  The diners sat under umbrellas.  After a couple of years, a permanent structure was built over the kitchen and a blue tarp was place over a frame covering the dining space.   This year a permanent structure with a thatched roof now covers the diners.  It looks strong and sturdy.  Clearly Rosa intends to stay.

At the beginning, the place was open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  For the past two years she closed at 4:00.  No dinner.   The menu was limited but the food was wonderful and inexpensive.  We four ate there at least twice a week.  For the first time this year, we four ate lunch enjoying the new structure.

Rosa is always adding new ideas.  Now once a week, Rosa is teaching cooking.  From 5 to 7, for a fee, Rosa will teach a dish which you will cook,  then eat.  And they are open for dinner for only tacos and baked potatoes.   Rosa has also hired a cook.  She was pleased to see us and we returned the sentiment.  This busy little lady had done well with her little restaurant.  Every year is a bit better.  I love to see progress.  And even better, my fish lunch was delicious.  Hats off to Rosa.

February 22, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Curling.

In Parry Sound, Ontario, where Ken was born and raised, there was a curling rink.  Ken curled once.  Curling was for the wealthy of the town and he was never invited to curl again but at least he knew something about the sport.  I have never been in a curling rink even though there were curling clubs in both Vancouver and Toronto where I lived at a time when I might have learned the game.  For several years I taught with Dotty W.  who was a good curler.  She and her husband often went away on weekends for bonspiels.  They won.  And she invited us to join her club in order to learn the game.  But Ken was at medical school at the time and we had no extra money so we did not play.

Several years ago, when we were in Liverpool, we watched all week the Canadian Brier, which is the Canadian men's championship.  The goal for us was to learn the rules and figure out the strategy.  We loved the game.  We were hooked.  Here in Mexico, the TV includes a Canadian sports channel, so we get to watch some curling along with hockey games.  Right now, the Women's curling championship is being held  in St. Catherines, Ontario, The Scotties Tournament of Hearts.  My problem is that they only show the games, beginning at 10:00 pm.  By the time the games are over is way after my bedtime so I am staying up too late.  I want them to show these games in the mornings when the games are being played not late at night.  I hope this weekend will be better.  I like to watch every game, especially when eating my breakfast.  I am betting on Ontario to win.

February 21, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. The Pool.

Wow.  I spent four hours at the pool this afternoon.   I have not been inclined to sit by the pool this season and I do not know why, but the weather today was perfect with the sky blue and the sun strong so I went down right after lunch.  Of course, Don and Doreen were already there but sitting in the sun.  I always sit in the shade in a regular chair, not a lounger.

First I did my exercises in the deep end.   My drill never changes.  I get into the pool at the shallow end because they have a railing.  From then on, I never touch the bottom, but swim to the deep end with all sorts of different strokes.  I do the  same exercises I do on dry land with weights, except I double the numbers because I have no weights.  I do all my exercises without touching the bottom, which is not so easy.  To do my drill takes about 20  minutes.

Next on my agenda is the hot tub, which is kept at 103.  Good conversations are held in the hot tub.  Cathy and Ted came along with four friends, so I chatted with them.  One friend spends 2 months in Winnipeg and 10 months in her new condo in Panama.  Everyone you talk to are from some place else which makes for interesting conversations.

Next up was another session in the pool and hot tub.  The pool water is kept at 85 degrees so it is pleasant to enter.  After another conversation with the group, I realized it was almost 6:00 so I headed to our condo.  I enjoyed my 4 hours at the pool this afternoon.  I bet I sleep well tonight.

February 20, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Pedicures.

This year, 2017, I will turn 80.  At some point in my life, I began to indulge myself.  When I turned 50, the agents at work gave  me a manicure and pedicure.  Until then I had never had either but since that time, I have continued to have pedicures several times a year.  Today, Doreen and I had a pedicure.   We had made an appointment last week at the mall.  The place is new so it sparkled with newness and energy.  They have all the new equipment and the place is clean as a whistle.  Doreen and I felt like queens sitting in the big luxurious chairs and being looked after by two young ladies attending our feet. This indulgence certainly makes you feel good.

Next we met Don and Ken for lunch at Jude's, just outside the hated market.   I ate mussels, which were unusual but delicious.  They were huge.  We four had a delightful day, indulging ourselves.

February 19, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Attitudes.

My friends are having a brief vacation in San Francisco.   They have no responsibilities except to enjoy themselves.  Yesterday was overcast and dreary with a forecast of drizzle so they did the most sensible thing to do.   They wore their brightest plaid shirts.  They were determined to be a bright spot in the day for anyone looking their way.

Last night in Nuevo Vallarta it  rained.  Except for a couple of hours this afternoon the sun did not appear.  We four spent a wonderful day in the condo reading.  Doreen cooked a marvelous meal at the middle of the day and we all took a nap.  The forecast tonight was for thunder and lightning and rain. They were right.  The rain came down hard.  I noticed lots of people sitting on their balcony watching and listening to the rain and enjoying themselves.

Ken and I have always ignored the weather when we travelled.  We wore appropriate clothes for the weather of the day and never mentioned the weather again.  Years ago, Ken and I were in Scotland with David and Suzanne.  This was before children.  We expected foul weather because we were there in March.  Much to our surprise, the weather was not terrible so everywhere we went, the locals would tell us how fortunate we were with the weather.  We agreed, but after hearing  the same comment  day after day, Suzanne said to us, "I have figured it out.  These people in Scotland do not know what good weather really is."   We laughed and agreed.  And we enjoyed their 'good' weather.  When we looked at the pictures back home, we realized that we all wore fleece jackets under rain coats.  And we were wearing gloves.    We just ignored their weather that was not as bad as we expected.  Attitude is everything.

February 18, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Lunch.

Somehow or another things seem more festive when you are being taken out for lunch.   I am not sure why.    It really makes no sense because we four take turns with paying the bill.   On Tuesday we ate lunch at the golf course.  Ken and I paid the bill which made it special for us because we were the hosts.   I made the reservation.  It was our party.  Today, Don and Doreen took us out for lunch which was special because we were being looked after.  We had no responsibilities except as a guest.  In some way it is a bit like trick the brain.  But it is fun.

Today we ate at the Mexican restaurant at the mall.  We four walked.  Doreen and I walk faster than Don and Ken so we had time  to check out the new pedicure place on the second floor.  Doreen and I will both have a pedicure on Monday at 1:00.  As usual, the food was excellent.  The service was as usual slow.  The waiters do not rush you.  It is their way of being polite.  After our lunch, we ate ice cream on the first floor.  Then we took a golf cart home to Playa Royale, our home.

But the time we arrived home at 3:30, I was ready to put up my legs.  Ken and I enjoyed being taken out for lunch.  Somehow or another, it makes us feel special.

February 17, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Traveling.

Fortunately, Ken and I have a host of memories traveling around North America.  From the time we married, we travelled using our 1953 Volkswagen bug, camping as we went.  We did as much traveling as possible, which was a good thing because many places we visited we have never  been able to get back to see again.  The brain is a wonderful thing.  Pictures stay in your brain, just as you originally saw them, or perhaps as you think you saw them.

When we moved to Texas in 1964, we drove a fancy new car.  Every other weekend Ken and I explored Texas and the south.  And we camped.  When the boys were born in 1968 and 1969, we dragged them with us but now driving a big station wagon.    It wasn't until we bought our first farm in 1973 that we stopped camping.  But by then we had driven all over Canada and the US.  And we did it on the cheap.

Lots of people have told me that they wish they could travel.  But they say it is too expensive.  Now Ken and I can not do much travel.  We do well to get from one place to the other of our homes but we have a wealth of pictures in our brains.  And we are very grateful that we travelled when we were able and not waited until we had lots of time and money.   We would have been out of luck.

February 16, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Dr. Villalobos.

At the end of my appointment with the good doctor, he stated that I can now consider my eye surgery a success.  He said that both eyes are functioning properly and with my glasses I see 20/20 in my right eye and 20/30 in my left, which he said is pretty good.  He now turns me back to my eye doctor in Mississippi.   This was all spoken to me in a rather formal manner even though his English is not perfect.   At the very end, he told me to call him immediately if I have any of the following, which he recited to me in detail.

Doreen came with me today to my appointment which was three weeks after my first.  Dr. Kosko from Mississippi gave me instructions and I have carried them out.    My pressures are good.  10 in the right and 10.5 in the left which are both excellent.   I e mailed  the results to Dr. K. this evening and I will see him on March 13.  Even though Dr. K. was anxious about us coming to Mexico, everything has turned out well with my eyes.

Fluvial is new to me.  Dr. Villalobos has his office in this subdivision.  Neither Ken nor I have ever been there even though it is quite large and has hundreds of restaurants.  It is a place for Mexicans.   There does not seem to be any tourists.  I noted many residences of every level.  We saw row houses and we saw gated communities of luxury homes.  And lots and lots of commercial enterprises.  I was pleased to see another area of Puerto Vallarta all because of my need to see Dr. Villalobos.  Once again, something good comes from everything.

February 15, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Our Lego Wall.

We all knew that eventually a big storm would knock down our wall.    But the wall did it's job.  The road was not torn out as it was during the last big storm.  Many times we would look at the wall as we walked across the causeway and say "The next big storm will  knock this wall down".  And it did.

Before the wall was built, we enjoyed walking along the causeway to the church, then we either continued on to Gill's house or returned back home.  The walk was pleasant.  On one side we could look out to sea and on the other we looked at the lake.  The breeze was always blowing.  We loved that walk.

But the hurricane took out the road which meant that to drive to Gill's house required a 35k drive.  The powers that be decided to build a wall.  We called it a lego wall because the wall had no foundation and no concrete.    It was made just like legos, stacking one block next to another and held together by projections in the concrete blocks.    On the ocean side they pushed big stones up to the top of the wall.  After a few years the wall leaned toward the road, but just a bit.

The  wall ruined our walk because we had no view of the sea nor any breeze.

The  big storm this week knocked down the center of the wall.   It fell toward the ocean.  The high sea and wind must have undermined the wall.  I hope they are slow to repair the wall.  I wish to walk across the causeway in Nova Scotia  and enjoy the breeze and the views.    I am pleased the road was not torn apart but the lego wall was ugly.  Now the middle third of the wall has tipped over.  If we are lucky, they will leave it alone.  Time will tell.

February 14, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Valentines Day.

My Father felt the same thing about Valentines Day as Mothers Day, which was that the love of your life and your Mother should be treated well every day of the year and not just on the special days. He further thought the special days were promoted by the card and floral companies.  Our family has continued with his attitude so Valentines Day is not a big deal with us.

But still we celebrate.  For the first time this season we ate lunch at the golf course, sitting on the balcony overlooking the 18th green.   Don and Doreen, Ted and Cathy and Ken and I took the shuttle.  I had made a reservation so we were seated at the end of the balcony in a private area immediately adjacent to the railing.   The food was excellent and to celebrate we all ate ice cream.  Mexican ice cream is wonderful but it turned out to be the only dessert they had left.

After taking the shuttle home, we all had a nap, a reminder that we had celebrated many Valentines Day in the past and now were due a late afternoon rest.   Eating lunch at the golf course is perhaps my favorite.  And we watched the sunset from our balcony while we munched on olives and cheese.  It is difficult to find a better way to celebrate Valentines day than today.  Perfect weather, good food and fine friends.  Pretty Nice.

February 13, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. The Bean Pot.

Until a year ago, the only bean pot I knew of was when I baked a big pot of beans.  But now I know better.  In fact, I  know just enough to have a conversation.  I know that tonight, Harvard won the championship of The Bean Pot Tournament, the first time since 1993.  Before that, Harvard had won 3 of the previous 6 years,  never dreaming that there would be a long drought before more championships.

The Tournament was started in 1952 and has been held every year since.  The finals of the tournament was held tonight between Boston University and Harvard.  BU was favored but Harvard won 6 to 3.   The tournament is held over two weekends.  Ken and I watched one game last weekend between Boston College and Boston University, which was won by BU.  The other game between Northeastern University and Harvard was played the next day but was not shown on our TV.  Harvard must have won.  Winning The Bean Pot gives bragging rights for the whole year for these local teams so each team is keen to win.  Also at least half a dozen teams whoever won the Bean Pot also went on to win the National championship for hockey.

Watch for the NCAA hockey tournament which will be starting soon.  These college kids play excellent hockey.  The last four teams are called The Frozen Four.   Just as an aside, Harvard football team also won the Ivy League championship.  Next year, Ken and I will also watch for The Bean Pot Tournament.  We have had fun this year.

February 12, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. The Weather.

We four are feeling smug.   Real weather is breaking out all over Canada and the US.   High winds are forecast for the DC area tomorrow.  Snow storms are blanketing Nova Scotia.  Toronto and the area seem subject to more snow and more freezing rain,  Tornados are still an issue hitting the Gulf  including New Orleans, Mississippi coast along with Alabama.   Even Vancouver and Victoria got their share of snow and freezing temperatures.  Kenny from Vancouver posted a picture of their sail boat covered with a foot of snow.  Sail boats are not supposed to be covered with snow.

We are just grateful that we bought this place long ago so we have a comfortable place to live in order to  keep away from the inclement weather.   A young man mentioned on the elevator today that the temperature in Chicago was 20 degrees F. along with high winds.  He was grateful to be living at Playa Royale in Nuevo Vallarta where the temperature every day is 82.  He is here with his two young children and his wife.  He was wishing they would stay a month instead of two weeks.

One of the joys of being retired is that we are able to stay here until Spring returns to Mississippi.  We have spent many winters here but we have not yet become complacent with the sun and the warmth.  Every  morning we are grateful for the weather.  And we are delighted to be able to live here.

February 11, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. The Pool.

For the first time this season, I went to  the swimming pool at Playa Royale.   Ted did not even recognize me, he was so unused to seeing me there.  It is a lovely place to sit.  The weather is perfect and the foliage beautiful.  The chairs and lounges are comfortable so I am not sure it took me so long to get there.  Don and Doreen went down mid morning.  After lunch Doreen and I enjoyed the rest of the afternoon sitting by the pool.

I swam and used the hot tub.  And I sat in the shade.  The people sitting beside us were quiet.  The man was napping and the lady was doing  hand work.  But they were not interested in talking with us, which is unusual.  Most folks are chatty and friendly.  When the lady stood up, I asked her where they were from and we spent the next thirty minutes talking.  They are from Iowa and they are farmers.  They farm a 650 acre piece of land where they raise corn and beans.  For years they ran a dairy farm but 15 years ago they got rid of the dairy cattle and now raise crops.  The only help they have is a temporary part time worker.  Unfortunately the price for corn and beans is down so farmers are hurting.  Fortunately she was raised on a farm so she knows all about farming and working.  I enjoyed talking with them.  Now I will head down there tomorrow too.  I liked it by the pool and I especially enjoyed talking with the farmers from Iowa.

February 10, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. A Lovely Day.

For the first  time this season, we walked to the hotel/time share.   The distance is about twice the walk to the market.  The day was perfect for walking especially in the shade.  We four walked on the bicycle path, which is always shaded.  Our goal was to change dollars to pesos and to eat lunch at one of our favorite spots,  at the end of the hotel right beside the beach.  We did well walking.  Doreen and I always walk faster than Don and Ken so I changed the money immediately, then sat in the comfortable chairs in the beautiful open center room. When the men arrived, we four sat for a while, enjoying the lovely open space.

The restaurant has done a good thing by installing a cover over a large section of the outside area.  In the past, we always sat under the palm trees to provide shade but as the sun moves, we found ourselves moving the chairs or table.  Now we are always shaded but still close to the beach which always has breezes blowing.   Our meal was delightful, a welcoming lunch to Don and Doreen.  I ate tortilla soup and a greek salad.  I order tortilla soup in every restaurant because each place is a bit different  but always tasty.   And I ordered flan for dessert.

We four decided to take  a golf cart home to Playa Royale.  The  first thing we did when we got home at 3:45 was to take a short nap.  The rest  of the day flew away.  We have had a lovely day.

February 9, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Friends.

We have been fine living by ourselves  in Mexico.  Our time was spent reading, walking, using the computer and iPads and eating.  And when my eyes got tired I watched TV.  Now our friends Don and Doreen have arrived and life takes on a brighter hue.   We have been talking non stop.   Ken ordered me to stop talking because I start coughing when I talk a lot.  But I ignored him because we had a lot of ground to cover.  We had not seen them since last year in Mexico.

I have known Don since I was 15 when our family joined the Danforth Corps of The Salvation Army.  As I will be 80 this year, that makes us friends for 65 years.  Both Ken and Doreen came on the scene  2 years later so we all have been friends for a very long time.  Having friends of long standing is a great blessing.  They knew our parents and we knew their parents.  And we share a lot of friends.  We are delighted to have them visit us in Mexico.   We did fine by ourselves here in Mexico but it is more fun when friends arrive.

February 8, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. The Election.

I am waiting for civility and grace to appear.  One would think that after being so wrong during the election they might have a period of time for reflection, but that does not seem to be the case.  Take the case for the media.  Every paper but two in the US supported Hillary Clinton.  Every television station except one did everything in their power to elect Hillary.  They were all convinced she would win.  But they were all wrong.  I hear nothing of value from the Democrats trying to figure out how they went wrong.  Instead they cast aspersions on voters who elected Donald Trump.

And  since then, the hard left liberals have been nasty and lawless.  Their image is abysmal.

I listened to three CNN commentators discussing the future of the Trump administration.  What arrogance.  The same three were totally wrong with their predictions on the election so why do they think anyone would pay attention to their words?   Do they think people are stupid and have no memory?

The Democrate in congress are obstructing every move made by Mr. Trump for  no reason except to slow things down.  They merely appear foolish.   They will drive yet more voters to leave the Democratic  party.  Half of the voters in the nation voted for Mr. Trump, who ran on issues that should appeal to the Democrats in congress, such as infra structure, and drug expenses and tax reform.  Certainly the Republicans in congress will have a difficult time swallowing some of those three.  But the Democrats are not seeing the forest for the trees.  We need a return to civility and grace to move the country ahead.

February 7, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. The Riviera Grill.

In years past, The Riviera Grill was only open for dinner but not any more.  Now it is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.   Ken and I spotted their sign last week when we went walking down the bicycle path.  We were pleased because our preference is to go out for lunch.   The restaurant is about a quarter mile down the road from us, so it is an easy place to go in the daytime but difficult to walk it in the dark.   And it is so close to us that it seems silly to take a taxi,  so last year we never dined there even though we enjoy their food and decor.  Cathy and Ted invited us out for lunch today and Ken suggested The Riviera Grill, so off we went.

When the restaurant was designed, the different areas were separated by plantings which by now are mature so while we were sitting in one area of 5 tables, we were private and separated by other customers because of the bamboo.  The restaurant is under roof but has no walls so the breeze keeps you cool.  And the best part this year is they have new tables and chairs.  The previous chairs were cute but uncomfortable.

Our lunch was delicious and our waiter was charming.  And of course we always enjoy talking with Cathy and Ted.  They have taken on the task of checking up on us each week as they know we are alone, which we appreciate.   Ken and I enjoyed our three hours with them today and we especially enjoyed being at The Riviera Grill.  I mentioned to Ken that there were not many people having lunch when we were there, but he corrected me and said that I just could not see them because of the plantings dividing out the different areas.   Their system has worked.  Clever.

February 6, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. The Super Bowl.

Indeed.  The game was truly super.  At the end of the second period, Ken and I had a discussion about the probability of Atlanta winning the game.  I said, "The Patriots will win.  At half time their coaches will figure out how to handle the Atlanta defense and score lots of points and win the game."  We laughed, thinking it was a joke.  But I was right.

The interesting aspect of the second half was the inevitable spirit of both teams.  The Falcons looked as if they expected to lose and the Patriots looked as if they knew they would win.  You just felt it, even watching at home.   I also wonder what was said to the Falcons at half time.  Were they complacent?  Did the coaches make any changes with their system?  I would like to know.

At the same time as the Super Bowl, another sports channel was showing curling so I flipped back and forth and never watched the commercials.  The curling was the championship of  the skins game in Las Vegas.  Alberta against Northern Ontario men.   The contrast between football and curling was dramatic.  The Alberta team won and earned $75,000, a big number for curling.  The Patriots earned over $100.000. each for winning the game while the Falcons just over $50,000. each.   And because the game was in Texas, the players paid no state income tax, because Texas has no income tax.   I am surprised that the super bowl is not played every year in Texas.

This year, the Super Bowl was  SUPER!!

February 5, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. The Cleaning Service.

The same little lady has been cleaning our condo ever since we moved here years ago.  She is tiny, perhaps a foot shorter than me.  But she is mighty.  Our place does not really get dirty but her routine never changes.   We chatter away to each other even though she does not speak English and I do not speak much Spanish.    But we like each other.   The first time she saw us this season she hugged us both.

I know she is supposed to clean every part of the unit, whether or not it is dirty but I always wonder if she does the same system when we are not there in the unit when she is cleaning.  For instance, she always starts on the balcony.  She sweeps the floor first.  Then she dusts and wipes the railings and the table and chairs.  Next she washes the windows.  Finally she mops the floor.  My observation is that the balcony only needs a thorough cleaning once a month because it is not really dirty.  The same is true of the two other  bedrooms.  No one is using them but she cleans the bathrooms and bedrooms as if they had been used.   I would probably not clean what is already clean if I was the cleaning lady. But then I would probably get fired.  Every so often, the bosses come by to check what has been done and to ask  me if everything is OK so I suspect her drill never varies.

She changes the sheets each week too and changes the towels.  She comes every Sunday.  We are happy to see her and she is happy to see me too because I always give her a tip.  Cleaning ladies make my life easier and I am grateful for all her hard work.    She is a sweet little lady.

February 4, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Sunsets.

Every evening folks come out to their balcony and watch the sunset.   We have been doing it for years because every sunset is different and beautiful.  This past week has been different because each evening sounds like a party.  Our five  buildings are set like a horseshoe so I can see the balconies of three of the buildings and the side balconies of two.  I always look to see how many people are sitting watching the sunset.  But this week I have been able to hear the talking.   Tonight I heard at least two fathers calling the children  to come to the balcony.   There is constant chatter from every direction.  Normally I hear nothing except the clinking of glasses.

The sunset is spectacular with the big orange ball dropping down over the horizon of the ocean.  Every night this week, I heard clapping and cheering when the sun had set.  It was not coming from only one balcony.  I heard it from every building.  Parties had  broken out in our complex.  Ken and I and our guests usually stay quiet as the sun is setting, as a reminder of  the  wonder of the sun and the earth.  But it is fun when every evening a party  breaks out within our hearing.  And I have no idea why.

February 3, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Eating.

Ken and I are eating most of our meals at home.  This is unusual.  Usually in Mexico we eat at least one meal a day at a restaurant.  But I did a big shopping at Mega,  so we have lots and lots of food.  Ken is cooking our big mail,  often around 2:00.  Today he prepared fresh tuna and asparagus.  It was delicious.   With a full fridge and freezer, we have decided that eating at home is easier.  And with the Farmer's Market right across the street, we are well supplied with fresh fish and bread along with fruit and vegetables.

We have not needed to go into the market in the mall.  I do not like that grocery store so prefer to stay away.  At the Mega you can buy milk from the shelves not the fridge.  You keep it in the pantry until it is opened.  Then it must be in the fridge.  I bought a case.  It is convenient.  After our dental appointment, we ate lunch at the Mexican restaurant in the mall.  They have upgraded their chairs.  Now the  chairs are comfortable but not so cute.  I like comfort.

Eating at home is pleasant but soon we will want to have lunch at the golf course or across the street at the Riviera Grill.  But so far, we are happy staying at home.

February 2, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Mark Steyn.

La Vie en Rose was featured as his song of the week.  The song was sung by Patsy Gallant, a person who was not known to me but who has been singing for a very long time.  You can find these songs on his web site, markSteyn@steynonline.com.  Mark Steyn was born in England and lived in Montreal for many years.  I think he lives now in New Hampshire.  He makes his money writing, mainly political in nature.  But in addition he dabbles as a musician.  And he knows a lot about popular songs.  Several of his books deal with information about songs.  It is clear that he loves songs.

In the feature on the song of the week video, Mark talks about the song and when and who wrote it and who made it popular.  His information is short and interesting.  Then he introduces a singer who sings the song.  Last week was Patsy Gallant, who was Canadian.  She lived in Quebec City and has been singing professionally since she was 8.  How I missed her I do not know but she sang in a big hit in Paris which played for 8 years.  Mark has a small jazz group to accompany the singers and a small audience sits in the studio.  Patsy is still a wonderful singer.

A couple of weeks ago the singer was the lead from the Manhattan Transfer, who is still singing too and in in tune.  I look forward to listening to the new song of the week on Mark's web site.  He never fails to please.

February 1, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. The Dentist.

We use the dentist here in Nuevo Vallarta.  Every year we have our teeth cleaned.  This year, Ken had four fillings repaired.   Our dentist keeps her office in the Mall so it is easy for us.  We just walk.   People tell us they use a dentist in Bucerias because it is cheaper but you must take a taxi to get there which is a nuisance.   Last year Rita and Ian had their teeth cleaned too.  The cost is less that half the cost age home.  The dentists are well trained and high tech.  My teeth were cleaned with an ultra sound, so no scraping.  Ken and I made an appointment last week.  We both arrived together and were treated at the same time.   Our treatment was done competently and pleasantly.    We were happy to have had it done.

But I do not enjoy going to the dentist.  The ultra sound works with a fine stream of water onto your tooth.  A suction is also in your mouth which helps, but I do not like it.  The only good part of the procedure is when the peppermint cleanser hits my gums.  Then I know that I am heading for home and that soon I can get out of that dentist chair.

Today when I was sitting in the chair with my mouth wide open,  I made a plan.  When I know that I am near the end of my life, I am no longer having my teeth cleaned.  I will boycott dentists.  Just thinking about it made me feel better.  Now the trick will be figure out the time period.  In the meantime, I go to the dentist.  But  I will not enjoy it.
