August 2, 2009. Chevy Chase, Md. County Fair.

The Bedford County Jr. Livestock Sale is an impressive event. It is the culmination of a week of Fair activities, which includes judging the animals and the produce and the hand crafted articles. Saturday is the day when the kids show their animals in the ring so all the people can buy their animals or donate it to an organization. The farm kids have spent that last year tending to their animal, feeding, brushing, watering and certainly naming the creature. But with a wave of their hand, off the much loved animal goes to the butcher shop. It is amazing how these farm kids never bat an eye about it. Perhaps because they make real money, generally between $1500. and $3000. for each steer. We bought another animal, this one raised by Kelley Jay. It was taken back to the Jay's farm for two months to grow a bit more, then when my freezer is almost empty, the freezer will be refilled with the new good Angus beef. Two other steers we bought, but gave them to the buy back program, where the butcher pays 76 cents while I pay the rest. Then we take a deduction for our taxes. It is a great program, well run and well attended and much appreciated by the kids and their parents.

Don and Doreen came to the farm for the weekend, arriving on Friday evening around six o'clock, after driving all day from Toronto. The GPS let them down at the very last hour, so they wandered around rural Pennsylvania for a bit, but the best part, was that they finally arrived. Ken's stew hit the spot for dinner, eating on the screened porch at the Hill house. We talked so late that Ken and I forgot to hot tub. They enjoyed the Fair and walked around the whole place, while I stayed in my place bidding on the steer. The Bedford Springs Hotel will be the site of our 55Th. anniversary, so we wanted to show them the place. Our lunch served in the crystal dining room was delicious. They did not bat an eye about our Fair duds. When Don and Doreen arrived on Friday, their car was almost out of gas, so we immediately drove to the Road Kill for gas and of course ice cream, which we ate as an appetizer. Saturday afternoon Ken made a fire, so we could get rid of our trash. The weather was lovely, warm and sunny, and the fire was hot. It was a fine combination.

Sunday, for the second time, we went to Mike's place for breakfast, then we all just puttered around the farm, which they love. They are still there and tomorrow will visit friends in Hagerstown, before returning to the farm next weekend prior to leaving for Toronto. Peaceful, is what Don keeps saying about the farm. Tomorrow, we fly to Nova Scotia, and will dine at Gills. Our August has begun.
