February 28, 2011. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Irish Stories.

I have always loved reading short stories.    In the past, magazines all published short stories in every months edition.  Now the only publication of note that always publishes short fiction is Commentary.   Over the years I have read many many short stories written by Irish writers, and have always thought them of high interest.  They tell a good tale.   I am now reading a re-printing of an anthology "Classic Irish Short Stories",  compiled by Frank O'Connor, who died in 1966, so this book is not new.  But they are wonderful stories and worth reading again.  I also just discovered that Elizabeth Bowen is considered Irish when I always thought her an English writer.

I thoroughly enjoyed the biography of John Adams.  I always knew him and his contributions to the country but I never knew much about him in detail.  Now I could bore you with the details!!.  I also read a piece by Bill Bryson on Shakespears, telling everything known about the man.  Clearly, the book was not long as not much is known.  As usual, Bill Bryson is interesting and entertaining.    I am also in the midst of a book about Mathematics by Alex Bellos, called "Here's Looking at Euclid".  It is fascinating, but I turn to the Irish stories for real enjoyment and fun.

I still have two books in my Kindle, but I am afraid it must await another long quiet time.  When we return home I will have magazines to read and objects to organize, so reading will wait.  I will be ready.

February 27, 2011. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Facebook.

My friends from work have told me that I need to be on Facebook.  I have resisted,  until now.   Our friend Ann Smith, who is an artist, sent us an urgent directive for us all to join Facebook.  Ken looked up her facebook page, and he joined.  Next he joined me up too.  But he has not taught me how to use it.  When I am in Bethesda, I will ask my friend Sarah T. to get me up to speed.   She is more patient.

The problem with the whole concept is that it is so public.   I have always wanted my friends somewhat selective.   Now in the modern world,  people have hundreds of 'Friends' on their Facebook, thus rendering the term 'friends' redundant or obsolete.  Certainly a different term for friends than I ever thought.  But I must be modern and join the real world.  Now I must figure out how to use it for my own ends.   I thought that by writing my blog I could allow my friends and relatives to catch up with our travels, as well as providing information for the granddaughters.  But it is not enough.  Now I must be on Facebook, and must update it too.  Poor me.  Too soon old and too late smart.  That's me.

February 26, 2011. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Walking.

The other morning, after breakfast, Gill, Ken and I decided to walk on the beach.  I am not in love with walking on the beach but out we went, with the understanding that we would walk as far as we could, then turn around and come back.  We headed north, looking at everything we found along the way.  Lo and behold, we arrived at Bucerias.   It took us almost three hours to get there, meandering as we went,  so we were hungry.

Fortunately, we know many restaurants  and we went directly to Karen's, a lovely spot right along the beach.  It was also the first restaurant you come to in the walk into Bucerias.  The food was excellent as was the cerveza.  Gill decided to walk home along the beach while Ken and I took a taxi.  It took Gill 90 minutes to get home.

Every day has a march past on the beach in both directions.  People march up and down, always in bare feet and always in bathing suits.  It is fun to just sit and watch as they march by.  One thing for sure is obvious.  Thin is better!!

February 25, 2011. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Puerto Vallarta.

It really is a charming old town, complete with cobble stones and very narrow streets.   After walking the length of The Malecon (boardwalk), and inspecting all the sculptures, Gill,  Ken and I ambled up along the river, looking at  the objects for sale in the little shops.  When weary, we stopped for coffee and brushetta at the River Cafe,  except Gill drank a margarita.

Next we walked right up a side street, straight up the hill, which was very steep.  I hate edges, but I managed to walk up these steep steps with no railing by keeping my focus on the wall, not the edge.  Amazing I could do it.  We finally decided to walk no further up the hill but to walk along the top.  Finally, Gill asked where we were going, and a nice lady asked if we were lost.   She finally told us about a little Tappas restaurant where we ended up having lunch.   Great food but it took us two hours.

The Galleries are interesting in Vallarta, and the three of us found some good ones.  Finally, we grabbed a cab back to our home in Nuevo Vallarta, and ended our day drinking margaritas on the beach and looking out to sea.  It was a grand day in Puerto Vallarta,  but we were all happy to be home.

February 24, 2011. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Oops!!

How could I be so stupid?  First I thought we were going for drinks with daughter and son-in-law, but soon realized that it was Joan and Harold, but only when they walked into the door.  I had met both over the last few years, but somehow, I confused the names.   The worst thing is that last year, Joan stayed with us so one would think I could remember her name..  No one knew but Gill and Ken that I was expecting their daughter!!.

Secondly,  on Tuesday, I just forgot to write my wee web log.  Just totally forgot.  I still do not understand how, when you do the same thing every day, you can just forget to do it.   I know that the brain stops registering automatic and regular activities, but still, it makes no sense to me.  It certainly is not that I am overloaded with scheduled events!!  I guess I will just blame Gill.   We have been talking non stop trying to catch up on the events of the past year.  I'm trying to decide whether or not I have always mixed things up and  forgotten things or whether the ageing process has taken hold.  We'll have to watch and see!!

February 23, 2011. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Joan and Harold.

They are typical.   Perfect examples of  everything that  is best in the English.    They are visiting our neighbors Margaret and David.   The other evening, we went next door for drinks.  We met Joan last year, but Harold did not come due to illness, but this season, here they were, in all their  glory.   They are everything you ever remembered about the English.  They are bright and eager and modest, but also interested and knowledgeable.  Not a bit pushy.   In a nutshell, they are both charming and delightful and probably a thing from the past.  You would never suspect them of being are either Canadian or American.

They were in North America for a birding tour of Texas that Joan won at a conference in England.  She is a retired physician and has taken up birding.   The contest she won was an all inclusive  trip to  the Texas gulf coast,  with airfare, accommodation and private guided tours for one week along with all the meals.  Spouse Harold only paid for his air fare.  It was too good to pass up,  she when in North America, they hopped over to see Margaret and David in Mexico.   They are both delightful and we enjoyed talking with them.

One of the most valuable part of the evening was Ken's conversation with Harold.  He is 86 years old and still travels.  The best part is that he has the same disease as Ken and has had it all his life although not as badly as Ken.  But there he was, walking and talking and being charming and excited.  Now Ken thinks we can travel until we are 90.  He is very pleased, all thanks to those lovely folks from England.

February 21, 2011. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. President's Day.

No holiday, here in Mexico, but Gill is here because of the week off from the University, so we are celebrating the Holiday anyway.  So far, our activities have not been strenuous but they certainly have been pleasant.

It is interesting to see the place through another set of eyes, especially someone who is so appreciative.  Gill loves the lush foliage  and the blossoms.  She is enjoying the warmth of the sun.  Right now she is sitting reading on the deck, in the full sun.  This morning we took a trolley ride, to let her see an overview of the place.  In fact we took one and a half trolley rides, first seeing the whole trip,  then returning to the other side of the marina for a walk and then lunch.

Lunch was wonderful, at The Porto Bella restaurant right alongside the canal.  The Iguanas were out sunning themselves or putting on a show for us.  Also a six foot long daddy.   Excellent food, good company, right price.  Gill paid.

At six, we visit our neighbors Margaret and David for a drink.  Their daughter and son-in-law, who we have met before, are visiting, along with their children, so as they must leave Wednesday, we are getting to see them now.  They are good neighbors and we like them.  Unfortunately they live in Kimberley, B.C. and only over lap a bit in Mexico.

So, a lovely day, right from the beginning to the end.

February 20, 2011. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Gill's arrival.

I am excited.  Gill is coming to visit us here in Mexico.  She lives in Toronto.  Their winter has been severe so she will be ready for a bit of warmth but it is a surprise that she is coming.  Most of our friends and relatives will not come to Mexico because of the violence.  But she is coming.  In fact she is in the airplane as we speak.  Gill is energetic and enthusiastic so it will be interesting to see what she thinks of our life style.  Ken has commented about us that  "we are better at doing nothing",  which is true,  but Gill has never seen us do nothing so it will be interesting.

Gillian is a good friend.  She and her husband Alan moved to Bethesda about the same time as us.  We met at the YMCA outdoor swimming pool and she quickly joined Picnic Group.   Her children, Tim and David were steps down from mine.  Alan and Gill moved to Toronto, Alan to be a full professor at the University of Toronto.  He had previously had surgery for the removal of a brain tumor.   Five years after the treatment we were called to rejoice with his progress but unfortunately, two weeks later, Alan had a seizure and he subsequently died.  It was very sad.  She had two young boys to support.   Gill proved to be a trooper.  She completed her PHD immediately and has always been productive.   Certainly she has been a good mother to her two boys who are both hugely successful.

She is the one who bought the first lot around the Bay from us in Nova Scotia and it is her who convinced the Elys and Mitchells to buy their lots and build their summer homes.  People think I was responsible but that it was not the case.  It was Gill's idea and her dream to have us grow old together in Nova Scotia.  And it worked!!   We will enjoy her visit.

February 19, 2011. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. The Last Night.

On our last evening at The Vallarta Palace,  we discovered something new.   Fancy coffee was served in the bar every evening from 5 to 6.  In addition, they prepared desert crepes, to go with the fancy coffee.   We had missed it every evening.  But we enjoyed them last evening.

The outside bar sits overlooking the pools, the beach and the Pacific Ocean, so it is a favorite place to have a drink and watch the sun set.   It is a gorgeous location.  Early on in our two week stay we enjoyed sitting and enjoying the scenery but latterly, we lost interest.   Yesterday afternoon, after trundling some of our clothes over to our locker at Playa Royale, we stopped for a drink.  First we had a cocktail, then a glass of wine, all the while trying to work out the disposition of our stuff from the apartment.  Then I discovered the coffee and crepes, which we enjoyed, all the while discussing the future of  our silver and crystal and dishes and books.  After yet another glass of wine, we left just in time to watch the sunset from our own room.  We had been sitting there almost three hours.

It was very productive.  I had thought about options, but the two of us had never discussed them.   Now, thanks to the food and wine and location, we were in the decision mode.  Unfortunately, I did not write it down!!

Mississipi Snowstorm! @ Kate not hunting

February 18, 2011. Vallarta Palace, Mexico. Another Big Shift.

I am sure we are going to miss this place.    But really, we are ready to move on.    I have often read that Jackie Kennedy could easily stay thin because all she needed to do was ask for a container of yogurt for lunch  and send half of it back to the kitchen.  Ditto for the children.  Ask for the peanut butter sandwich for the children, then sent the crusts back to the kitchen.  A normal Mother would spend time preparing the food, and  would not want to waste the left over food so would eat it.  That is how we live here.   We have gotten very selective with our food.  Our choices are unlimited but for some reason or another, most of the food we don't want.

But we do eat three meals a day.  I will be interest to know how many pounds we have gained.  The only scale we use regularly is at our gym at Playa Royale, so the first day back, we will head over to work out.  This morning Ken and I both had a half hour back rub, also a manicure and pedicure.  But tomorrow our life of luxury will be over and we return to our own place next door.  We are ready.

February 17, 2011. Vallarta Pallace, Mexico. A Day.

A really don't know if  it is good for you or not, but certainly it is pleasant.   We  awake at eight and Ken makes coffee in the room.   I have my first cup of coffee while reading in bed.  Sometime around ten we go down for breakfast, usually eating at the restaurant right by the beach overlooking the ocean.  Next we wander the grounds, admiring the foliage.    By then, most people have taken up their stations on lounge chairs, in full sun either by the pool or on the beach, reading.   I do not know how they stay put like that all day.  We return to our room, actually two rooms, one bedroom and one sitting and dining room, where we read or work on the computer.

Today we have no appointments or trips, so the full day is open to us.   We will begin to take belongings back to our own Playa Royale,  have lunch around two or three,  sit by the beach and swim after lunch and read the rest of the day.    Television is turned on prior to going to dinner at seven-thirty or eight to find out how the world is turning out.   Then we take in the evening entertainment in the amphitheater by the sea.  Without computers and Kindles we would be hard pressed to be happy, but to our great surprise, we are enjoying ourselves and enjoying each other.  It's a very nice surprise, discovering that we can do nothing.

February 16, 2011. Vallarta Palace. Fourteen.

Kate was fourteen yesterday.   She was thrilled with her birthday, as a gift from her parents was her own cell phone.   To receive her gifts, she was required to seek them out from the list of hints given by her parents aka a scavenger hunt.  So first she must figure out where it was, then find the gifts, somewhere in the house.  The final hint was the sound of the ringing phone, which she was required to track down.  I was not there but it seemed like a great idea and certainly, she was thrilled.   I bet she will always remember her fourteenth birthday, the day she received her first cell phone.

I have no recollection of my fourteenth birthday.   I know I turned fourteen when living in Vancouver and I know I was busy.  But I have no clue about the gifts or a party.   I was in the 9th grade when I turned 14, attending King Edward High School.  I played on all the school teams, field hockey, basketball and softball, also track and field where I threw the discus.   The only reason I was on the track and field team was because  my friends from the other teams  were on it and I wanted to be on that team too.  I certainly could not run fast or jump far, so the only thing left was the discus.  I was terrible but I had fun.  Then I worked Saturday morning at Grace Hospital for Aunt Margaret, attended Girl Guides Thursday evenings,  and Corps Cadets Tuesday evenings.  Youth Group was Friday evening.  Also sang in the Singing Group led by my Mother.  Life was busy.  No wonder my grades were not so great.  From all that time ago, I still have my good friend Beverley who was also a girl guide but did not attend  The Salvation Army.

Things have changed so much.  I attended all these events using  public transportation, even after dark.  And I certainly did not have my own cell phone.  But in the world of today, a young person needs a cell phone for security so I am delighted that Kate has her very own cell phone.  Kate is delighted too.

February 15, 2011. Vallarta Palace, Mexico. A walk.

Every morning after breakfast Ken and I amble leisurely around the grounds.   You would think that walking the same route would be boring to us as normally our instinct is to take a different path, but here at The Vallarta Palace we discover something new every day.   Today was no exception.   A topiary made of a cradle complete with baby inside and a handle was new to us.  It was not new, we just did not notice.

Topiary is a big deal here.  We had noticed them out front walking by and Ken had taken many pictures, but inside the grounds you see them everywhere, even when you don't really notice, until you look carefully.  The foliage is lush and grows quickly so they must be trimmed regularly but it is amazing in the variety.  You see hats and elephants and caterpillars and centipedes and everything their fancy has taken them.  Everywhere you look you see something you missed yesterday.

In addition, all the plantings are named with a sign in four languages so every morning we learn a few more names of the plants.  Every morning we walk the same path, seeing different things than we saw yesterday.  How does this happen?  I know nothing has really changed but our eyes light on different objects.  It is very nice.

February 14, 2011. Vallarta Palace, Mexico. I Love You.

Happy Valentine's Day to all.  I am reading a biography of John Adams.   As he and his wife Abigail were often separated while he was away on politics,  both in Philadelphia and in Europe,   they wrote copious letters back and forth, loving  letters of support.   Often, they described how they felt when apart, which was basically, not good.  They felt better physically and functioned and thought better if they were together.   But at no time in any letter did they say to each other I Love You.

Now, John and Abigail were from Mass., who used to be proper in dealings with others.  But now in 2011, I Love You is used at the end of any phone conversation or when saying goodbye anywhere in America.   To a Canadian, it seems false and trite.  We do not, in public anyway, easily tell people I Love You.   In one way, I think it is a good idea to let your family members know that you love them, but it is infinitely more important to show your family by your actions that you love them  rather than just say the words.

I have observed family members impose on each other,  requesting car rides or  help here and there, making very difficult for the family member to comply, and the conversation is ended with I Love You.  It seems insincere.

I am trying to say the words to my grandchildren,  who after all,  are Americans.  But they also  have been taught that Canadians don't speak that way at least not all the time.    Are we less loving, us Canadians?  I don't think so.  I, for one,  am always more interested in the action than the words.

February 13, 2011. Vallarta Palace. Inclusive Resorts.

It is unusual for us to stay at all inclusive resorts.  We certainly have never been at an all inclusive resort for two weeks.  Now we know why.  The food is lavish.  Five restaurants are at the ready, all to please your palate.  For breakfast and lunch they serve a buffet at three locations.   At dinner, the menu is different in each of the restaurants.  One serves Asian, another Italian, one Mexican and another a Brazilian steakhouse.  The last is a romantic lobster and steak dinner that you book ahead and are served by the beach.  Clearly, each restaurant is different.  But now that we are in the second week of our visit to The Vallarta Palace, it seems to us that all the food tastes the same and is a bit boring.

We had mentioned it before,  while staying at all inclusive resorts and cruises,  but we forgot.  Today we were trying to figure out why we feel that way and have decided that the food is fine, but we have changed.  By the end of a week, we know what is on the menu and even though the buffet is lavish and varies day to day we know all the options.  The sense of anticipation is absent, therefore the food becomes boring.  There is something about a human being that requires variety.   I know we will miss the many trays of fruit,  but at the moment, it seems like all the food tastes the same.  We are perverse.

February 12, 2011. Vallarta Palace, Mexico. Canal Trip.

We saw very small crocodiles, just a week old, basking on a branch sitting in the sun.  We saw many birds, the most interesting being the tri-colored night heron, who live in close proximity to the crocodiles, cleaning the teeth of the crocodile and making their nest right outside the nest of the crocodiles.  We saw adult crocodiles over twenty feet long, both female and male guarding the nest.  We saw many many iguanas,  both male and female, all perched up in the trees again sunning themselves.

For several years, I have wanted to go up the canals around our resort but for some reason, we kept delaying the trip, probably because we hate spending money.  But at the Vallarta Palace, we have free trips, so today we took the canal boat trip.  I loved it.  Our guide was a veterinarian and the boat operator was a biologist, so between the two of them we learned more than we could ever remember.  The boat moved very slowly so we got to see a lot close up and personal.   We saw hundreds of birds but the guides were much more interested in the reptiles.

On the way back, we drove down all the canals past the huge houses.  I was pleased not to own any of them!!

February 11, 2011. Vallarta Palace, Mexico. More Books.

I recently read another of Bill Bryson's books "An African Diary".    It is short and describes eight days traveling in Africa with the Care group, specifically to write a book to raise money for Care.  It is a re-printing of the book originally published in 2002.   The second part is the first chapter of Bill's latest book I just read, The Home, added as a way to flesh out the African Diary and raise more money.  Bill is an excellent entertaining writer but the African Diary is not worth buying.

Jerome K. Jerome deals with every ism controversial at the turn of the century and beyond.  The really interesting thing is that we still argue about the same topics today.  Things always stay the same, it appears. He is a tedious writer but certainly tells you how people lived at that time period.  He is a bit like reading Edith Wharton, but not nearly as skillful.  I completed one of his books and have completed  5% of his work  on my Kindle.  My problem is that I really only want to read "Three Men on a Boat", but I do not know how to find it without reading everything ahead of it.  There must be a way.

I am now reading a biography of John Adams, by David McCullough.  You know a lot about John Adams, but until now I have never read a biography so I am enjoying it.  Interesting man and an even more interesting wife.

February 10, 2011. Vallarta Palace, Mexico. A New World.

We are a mere five hundred yards from our own Playa Royale but we are in a whole new world at Vallarta Palace.  Here, guests come for a week and are more excited.  Alcohol is free, with the mini bar stacked with everything you could want, including gin, vodka, whiskey and tequila, so people drink more at least for the first few days.  They rush around taking trips.  Large groups come together, many for conferences, so the large groups gather for a drink prior to their private dinners around the pool.   The conversations are loud and full of laughter.  They are having fun.  There is very little interaction between guests.   These groups know each other and never speak to anyone else.   It is interesting to observe.  Even couples stick together.

Every evening a show is held at the outdoor amphitheater.  It is a lovely facility right beside the beach.   We always attend these nine o'clock performances.  Last evening was a display of Mexican dancing.  Although the dancers were skilled, Mexican dancing is somewhat repetitious.  An older man, who was probably deaf,  sitting right behind us,  said to his wife "but they keep doing the same things over and over again", which was true.  His wife shushed him anyway.  The evening before was an excellent circus, with only six performers giving a fine rendition of Cirque de Soloel.  Great gymnasts and dancers and jugglers.  They did it all.  One evening we left, it was so bad.   But we enjoy the energy and enthusiasm of the staff.   It is indeed a different world, here at The Vallarta Palace.  I bet that we will be ready to go back to our own condo after two weeks of living the high life.

February 9, 2011. Vallarta Palace, Mexico.. San Sebastion, Jalisco.

San Sebastion  was founded by the Spanish is 1604.  Of course it had been in existence for hundreds of years, where the Incas mined silver in the area.  But the Spanish discovered the silver mines and made it into a proper town complete with church and town hall and jail.  At it's peak, thirty thousand people lived there but now it is home to three thousand.

Today we took a trip to see the old colonial town.  I don't believe it has changed for hundreds of years.  The streets are cobblestones and very narrow and wind up hill and down dale.  The town is in the mountains, a two hour drive from our home in Nuevo Vallarta.  The road from the coast was put through in 1957.

I can never decide whether it would be better  to fix the place up or leave it as it was hundreds of years ago.  There were no shops at all worth looking at.  The lunch was great, served in an old restaurant.  We wandered around the town and up and down the narrow streets along with our tour guide and all the rest of the group.  I don't really enjoy organized trips.  The tour guide talks too much.  But we enjoyed it anyway.  The bus driver was careful.  And we did not need to drive.  It was a good long day.

February 8, 2011. Vallarta Palace, Mexico. A Hot Rocks Massage.

We both had them, eighty minutes of a Hot Rocks Massage.  I convinced Ken to have one, truth be told.  He has just recently been willing to take a massage, let alone the exotic hot rocks.  His increasing arthritis has made him more amenable to massages, including the hot rocks.    I love massages.  One Christmas, Santa gave me one massage every week for a full year.  Everyone assumed it was from Ken but it actually was my secret gift to myself.  I loved it.

Many years ago, on some trip to the south seas, I took a hot rock massage, but I did not like it.  I  can not recall what I did not enjoy about the treatment.  Since then, many folks have spoken highly of the technique so I persuaded Ken to have us both try them out.  Sure enough, it was great and we loved them.

It is hard to fathom, but since we have arrived on Saturday, which is four days,  we both have had, each,  a half hour back massage, a manicure and pedicure each (yes, Ken too),  and an eighty minute hot rock massage.   We are indulging ourselves because it all comes free with the admission.   It costs no more money and we are having a blast.  Who would have thunk it!!

February7, 2011. Vallarta Palace, Mexico. Service.

Anyone in the service industry could learn a thing or two from The Vallarta Palace staff.  They are wonderful, from the top to the bottom.  I have been watching them since our arrival on Saturday and have been trying to figure out why they make you feel so good about staying here.  In the past, in superior hotels, I had decided that what was done that makes the hotel so remarkable was not necessarily such big deals but when combined with all the services, you recognized superior service.  The same is true here.

Yesterday we were moved to a bigger room.  The staff listened and immediately took action.  This morning while finishing breakfast, one of the chefs and the head of the restaurant, stopped by our table to introduce themselves and to ask us if  we were happy with breakfast, and to ask is there was anything else we would enjoy.    Every staff person in the hotel speaks to you as you pass with a greeting and a smile, from the floor cleaner to the managers.   While walking through the lobby this morning, we spoke to a young man who is in charge of introducing you to the hotel.  We saw him Saturday and he merely said hello this morning, but he also asked us if we had everything we needed.  "Actually", said I,  "I would really love to have a regular chair by the pool as all they provide are lounge chairs".  He immediately came outside with us and told us to ask any of the service people and they will bring us chairs, where ever we wish to sit.

Of course, the big things are important too.  The restaurants are all excellent and the pools are beautiful even though the rooms are not large.  The grounds are lavish with every tree and bush named.    But it is the willingness to listen and respond that makes the biggest difference.  It is a pleasure living here, even though it will be difficult to not eat too much!!

February 6, 2011. Vallarta Palace, Mexico. A New Home.

I am not sure to congratulate or castigate myself, but here we are, living in a lovely large two room suite, complete with two bathrooms, a sitting and dining room and two closets,  so I guess it was worth all my troubles.  We knew, when we bought into this place the rooms were not large, but we really expected to make use of this operation in The Dominican Republic so we didn't really care.   We checked into our room yesterday morning and discovered how small the room really was, especially coming from our condo which is large.  We settled in, put all our belongings in the drawers, then realized there were  few electrical outlets so called for help.  The staff was wonderful and immediately solved our problems.

This morning Ken and I had a meeting with the sales staff to update the Palace system.   The Manager stopped by to ask if we were happy with our accommodation.   That was his mistake.   I did tell him that the staff was wonderful as was the food but that our room was almost unlivable and outdated.  I gave details and made suggestions.  He apologized and asked to be excused for a moment.  When he returned, he offered us this new suite.  We accepted, even though we had to re-pack and settle into a new home.   The bell man came and carried all our bags yet again.  Now we are happy.  Now remember we are staying here for free.  When we bought into the program two years ago, we were given many free weeks so that is what we are using.  What a nerve for me to complain about free room and board, but I did and I am so pleased I did.  I'm getting smart now that I am getting old.

The moral of the story is that it pays to speak up, especially when you are pleasant!!

February 5, 2011. Vallarta Palace, Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Bags.

We looked ridiculous, carrying our bags from Playa Royale, where we have been living,  to the adjacent resort, Vallarta Palace.   When I say bags,  I mean grocery bags, not proper traveling bags.  Our condo was booked for these two weeks,  so we had arranged to stay at The Vallarta Palace, an all inclusive resort we signed up for several years ago.   We bought into this place so the daughters-in-law could come for a vacation and have no requirement for preparing food but until now we have never made use of it, until now.

We travel with no clothes except what we are wearing along with our backpack, thus no suit cases, so when we knew we needed to move next door, we decided to just pack up our clothes in grocery bags and merely walk over from one place to the next, which is exactly what we did.  It was effective but we did look odd.  Ten bags in all along with our backpacks appeared at our new fancy hotel, and were left with the bell man at the front door while we checked in.  It took us two trips to bring all the bags over, then they all stayed out front for another half hour while we organized our appointments for the spa.  They looked totally foolish, sitting out front along with the other fancy cases.  But our system was effective!!

The most interesting part was that the staff did not say a word or even raise their eyebrows when we both appeared looking like bag people.  They were pleasant and helpful.  But I tell the story to their families at dinner!!

February 4, 2011. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Snow Day.

The sky must be falling.  San Antonio schools were closed for a snow day.  The Texas girls were thrilled and made a Texas sized snow man.  In Dallas, where the Super Bowl will be played on Sunday, the temperature this morning was lower than in Anchorage,  Alaska.  Make no mistake.  It is cold in Texas.  We froze a pipe at the lake.  Of course, it was an outside pipe and the pipe was above ground but it has not frozen in the sixteen years we have owned it but now it has frozen.  It's cold in Texas.

Jackson, Mississippi has a second day of lack of schools too.  Ice on the ground makes it impossible to get around in any town but especially when there is no supply of sand and ice.  Even though the Mississippi children are home schooled, they keep to the public school schedule so they also were thrilled to have a snow day and they spend their time playing Wii.  The snow that fell in Jackson was mixed with rain and sleet and froze immediately when hitting the ground so outdoor play was impossible, much to the girls chagrin.

It is true.  The sky is falling, all over the US.

February 3, 2011. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Reality TV.

When we were in Texas for two weeks over Christmas I watched TV with David.  He knows I enjoy Antiques Roadshow so he tapes the shows and watches it later, usually with me.  He has that new  system that works beautifully.    Usually some or all of the girls join us.  They like it too.   While watching, we discussed the question of reality television and the fact that reality television was  seen everywhere.  It seemed to go from 'never seen' to 'see it everywhere',  just over night.  Of course, it came gradually, I just had not noticed.  He also taped a newer show 'Pickers' and we watched some of it too.  Both David and I agreed that reality television was everywhere on the tube.

Ken and I were driving south and checked into a motel.  We ordered Pizza sent to our room and  turned on the  television.  The History Channel was our last resort so we waited until the commercials were over and found to our surprise "The Pawn Stars"were on.  We kept  the channel on,  one show after the next.  First, we were surprised that the History channel was showing the program, then wondered why they were showing the full years program on one evening, then we just relaxed and enjoyed the program.  It was fun.  We told David.  He recorded it.  We watched when we were in Texas.

We arrived in Mexico a bit sick, so one day I ate breakfast and lunch in bed, watching TV. and found yet another reality television show I enjoyed.  "The Dog Whisperer" is on the National Geographic channel and they were showing episodes one after another, all day until three o'clock when I finally quit.  I can't understand why that channel is showing that program, but they are.  I enjoyed watching the shows and have seen one or two of them since, but only one at a time.  I must tell David.

I am sure the reality television craze will end sooner or later, but for now, you spot them everywhere.  I have enjoyed them.

February 2, 2011. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Jerome K. Jerome.

It must have been free on my Kindle.  I have the complete works of Jerome K. Jerome.   Ken spotted it on his Kindle and asked me if I was aware of the author.  I wasn't but he was on my Kindle so I must have put it there.   I vaguely recall a review of a resurgence of interest in this obscure English author so,  as it was free, I now have it in my e book.

I started into the first book, and read all day.  I have read 3% of his complete works!  The protagonist in this book,  (the name escapes me),  is a woman,  which for a man gives himself a difficult task.  It is ridiculous the things he says this lady speak, but of course, I was not there in the late nineteenth century so perhaps that was how they spoke.

I subsequently looked up information about Jerome K. Jerome.   His best book was 'Three Men on a Boat', the only book that was successful.  It has been made into a movie no less than three times.  He was poor as a child, was a journalist, wrote his whole life and had one child, Elsie, who died before him.  He died in 1926.  He wrote a memoir which I will read.  But I bet I will not read the complete works of Jerome K. Jerome.

February 1, 2011. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. My e mail.

Here it is again  Frdickie@me.com.    frdickie@me.com.    frdickie@me.com.  It is the best thing since sliced bread.

My apartment is for sale and for the past two days we have been negotiating the two offers.  With my own e mail it  has been easy or at least possible.  Trying to see over the shoulders to look on Ken's e mail would be painful.  I read the e mail, then I just tell Ken what is in the computer and then we respond.   As we all know, the real estate world is not easy right now.  Buyers are feeling entitled and even when they put their best foot forward,  they really wish they hadn't done it.  But I know that all things work out in the long run so I am not worried.  We are not sold yet.  These things take time as you know!!

So now, if you wish to contact me, frdickie@me.com is the way to go.
