Once upon a time, we lived over a hardware store in Toronto. Any object we did not want we would place outside the door on the sidewalk. Every morning, that object was gone. We were poor ourselves so the stuff outside our door was not fine furniture or fancy clothes. But everything was picked up over night. I mean everything. This was long before recycling became trendy, but that was certainly recycling. The system worked well. We made no trips to Goodwill or The Salvation Army. Just put it outside and it was gone.
This afternoon I was reminded about the difference between then and now. Tomorrow, our trash will be picked up. We have 2 big bins of stuff, which includes lots of broken down boxes, along with bags of clothes and shoes. In addition I put out 4 perfectly good lamps, just sitting beside the trash bins on the side of the road. The lamps are big and old and we do not want them any more. I was wondering if anyone will pick up any lamps before the trash men arrived? I am guessing not. This area is a far cry from our hardware store apartment. What a difference 55 years has make in our lives.
