May 23, 2016. Madison, Mississippi. The Queen's Birthday.

"The 24th of May is the Queen's Birthday.  If you don't give us a holiday we will all run away".  This weekend was the celebration in Canada, a time when traditionally the cottages are open for the season.  Next weekend is Memorial Day in the US but sometimes the celebrations occur on the same weekend.  Memorial Day is always the last Monday in May and the Queens Birthday is celebrated on the closest Monday to the 24th which was Queen Victorias birthday.    So sometimes they are on the same weekend.   Pools open and cottages too even though for much of the US it has been warm for a long time.

When Ken and I first moved to Texas in 1964, we explored Texas and camped in many of their lovely state parks.  We were the only people in the parks even though the weather was beautiful but after Memorial Day, the parks were full.  The same with the pools.  My sister and brother in law visited us in Texas every Spring.  Carol was the only person swimming in the lake in April but after Memorial Day, everyone was swimming.  It is all the custom to wait until Memorial Day weekend to begin the swimming season.   Our subdivision has a pool/  I walked up yesterday to see if anyone was swimming.  It was empty although the water was clean.  Next week, after Memorial Day, the pool will be busy.  It makes no sense but it is true.  The Queen's Birthday and Memorial Day are important weekends in the year.  Both are triggers that bring in summer fun.
