February 25, 2017. Playa Royale, Mexico. Outdoor Hockey.

Who would ever dream that 60,000 people would spend a lot of money to buy a ticket to watch a hockey game in an outdoor football stadium in the freezing cold.  You can barely see the players let alone the puck.   Several years ago, some clever person in the NHL suggested that the league hold a regular season game outside in a football stadium on January the 1st.   Lots of people thought it ridiculous.  The first outdoor game was sold out.  A star was born.

Today in Pittsburgh, the Philadelphia  Flyers played the Pittsburgh Penguins in the outdoor baseball stadium in Pittsburgh.  Every seat was full.  Evidently, the players love the outdoor games.  Many Canadian players grew up playing on lakes and backyard rinks so it is reminder of their youth but more and more of the players have always played in rinks  but they love the idea of outdoor hockey.  The game today was won by Pittsburgh.

It does make you wonder why it took so long for the officials of the NHL to think about holding the outdoor classics?  Everyone both players and fans today seemed to love the game,  I enjoyed it on TV  too but I was not cold.
