Until a year ago, the only bean pot I knew of was when I baked a big pot of beans. But now I know better. In fact, I know just enough to have a conversation. I know that tonight, Harvard won the championship of The Bean Pot Tournament, the first time since 1993. Before that, Harvard had won 3 of the previous 6 years, never dreaming that there would be a long drought before more championships.
The Tournament was started in 1952 and has been held every year since. The finals of the tournament was held tonight between Boston University and Harvard. BU was favored but Harvard won 6 to 3. The tournament is held over two weekends. Ken and I watched one game last weekend between Boston College and Boston University, which was won by BU. The other game between Northeastern University and Harvard was played the next day but was not shown on our TV. Harvard must have won. Winning The Bean Pot gives bragging rights for the whole year for these local teams so each team is keen to win. Also at least half a dozen teams whoever won the Bean Pot also went on to win the National championship for hockey.
Watch for the NCAA hockey tournament which will be starting soon. These college kids play excellent hockey. The last four teams are called The Frozen Four. Just as an aside, Harvard football team also won the Ivy League championship. Next year, Ken and I will also watch for The Bean Pot Tournament. We have had fun this year.
