Wendy and Ken are planning to take a car trip around the Gaspe Peninsula this Fall. So I have been remembering 1962 when Ken and I took that same journey. At that time, the population was sparse and very few tourists wee to be seen. But the scenery was glorious. And we enjoyed our trip.
One day we went out on a fishing boat with two fishermen who made their living fishing. We had arranged the day before with the lady who owned the B&B where we stayed. It was an unforgettable day. We met at 6:00 and out we went. They men hand lined for cod. They spoke no English and we spoke no french but they taught us to fish. But they pulled in 10 fish for every one that we caught. And the fish were big and abundant. And we had fun.
By the time we were ready to come into shore, which we did just afternoon, Ken and I were weary but the poor fisherman had to take their catch and sell to the restaurants and on the street. Catching the fish was only part of their job. Both Ken and I were pleased that we did not earn our living catching fish. But we had quite an experience all those years ago. Happy memories.
