May 18, 2017. Madison, Mississippi. Trees.

Tonight while we were eating dinner, we heard a loud crash.  Ken thought at first a big bird had hit the window but when I investigated I could see a tree branch had come down and had landed on the roof, ending up in the courtyard beside the fountain.  There appears to be no damage but I have not yet actually looked at the roof.  We love all the trees on our property but I have always hated branches overhanging the house.   There are 32 trees on our property, some big.  The tree trimmer cut back many limbs but we still have big branches above the roof, which is not good.

In the south, tree shade is a huge factor with the cost of air-conditioning.  I can see why people planted all the trees.  The trees in the front provide total shade for us in the afternoon.  The same for the water side in the morning.  We are shaded.  Winter time with the lack of leaves does the opposite so our house is warmed by the sun both front and back, thus saving us money for heat.  We do not want to cut these big trees down at the front of the house.  But I also do not want a big limb coming down on the house.  We must investigate our options.
