Whales were seen in Gull Bay today, right in front of our home. It was exciting. Last evening I spotted birds diving for fish, and wondered if we would see whales today. Gill called at 9:00am to sound the alarm: "There are whales in Gull Bay". We watched them rolling along for an hour. They seemed to just stay near the top of the water, with their backs and flukes only coming out of the water, clearly visible with the naked eye. We did not see much in the way of spouts. We counted six or seven large whales and several babies.
This evening it was even better as we saw many spouts, both close in front of the house and many further out at sea. It doesn't really matter how many times you see these huge creatures. It is always exciting. After dinner, I spotted the birds diving for fish and as we watched the fish, we saw our first spout. They put on a show. We watched for ages, as they gradually moved around the Bay, both babies and older whales, here for their evening meal. The birds were as impressive as the whales. Today was a wonderful day at Western Head.
