June 5, 2022. Sault St. Marie, MI. The Pilot Ship.

A few minutes after the ship leaves the harbor, a little boat approaches the cruise ship.  The little boat says Harbor Pilot.   The little boat draws right to the side of our cruise ship and if you look ever the railing you can see a man get from the big ship to the little boat, all without falling into the water.  The harbor pilot has now officially turned over the ship to the the real captain.  But within the harbor, the pilot captain is in charge.  That is the rule in every harbor in the world.

In order to become a harbor captain you must study and get certified.  But in order to get certified you must also be agile.  Because upon entering a harbor, the little boat brings the pilot captain out to meet our cruise ship.  Once again, the harbor pilot must get from the little boat to the big ship, all with both boats bobbing up and down.  The access door on The Pearl Mist is just below our cabins so David has gotten several good picture as the harbor pilot attempts to get in the boat.  It is a right of passage for every port of call.  And lots of fun watching the action.
