May 14, 2015. Harper, Texas. The Dollar Store.

This is a big deal. In Harper, Texas, we now have a Dollar Store. We stopped to shop for the first time this afternoon. Well, to tell the truth, Ken went in to shop while I stayed in the truck. Too many people for me to mix and mingle with to chance catching infection. He was delighted with the size and the variety of items for sale. Once upon a time, Harper was a thriving community but as transportation got easier, the smaller towns began to shrink. Now there are more stores closed than open but the schools are excellent and many people live on the back roads so in total, the population in the county has not shrunk. But Harper is but a shadow of it's former self. It is holding it's own. The Longhorn Cafe is always full and the Library resale shop is the place for bargains. The only bank is the best bank, according to Robbie and Joyce, and they encourage us to open an account. The feed store was recently purchased and is thriving and the gas station and grocery store has lots of customers. Perhaps with the Dollar Store thriving, more businesses will open too. It was the talk of the town when the sign was first installed telling that The Dollar General Store was coming to town. Now we hope it will be successful. We like new businesses in town.
